What Are High-Pressure Air Compressors?
High-pressure air compressors are industrial machines that intake ambient air and compress it to extremely high pressures, as high as 414 bar (6,000 pounds per square inch (PSI)). At every compression stage, the air is cooled, which allows it to be compressed to such high pressures. Typically, industrial high-pressure compressors can achieve compressed air pressures of anywhere between 138 bar to 414 bar (2,000 and 6,000 PSI), but ‘high pressure’ is defined as air compressed to more than 10 bar (150 PSI).
Effectively, high-pressure air compressors operate by converting mechanical energy into compressed air. This air is then stored under extremely high pressure! Their design usually involves the air compressor, with fill stations, tanks, and cylinder fill stations. To create optimal pressures, a complete high-pressure compressed air setup will have boosters and multistage intercoolers, which, as aforementioned, optimise the cooling process between the different stages of compression.
What Are High-Pressure Air Compressors Used For?
Due to their expert ability to generate and store compressed air at such high pressures, they are irreplaceable for a large range of essential applications across a multitude of industries. One of the major uses of high-pressure air compressors is to create breathing air, which is purified and compressed atmospheric air. Breathing air is mission-critical for a range of applications, including SCUBA diving and firefighting, and it offers essential air for individuals operating in limited oxygen environments. This makes air quality of the utmost importance to ensure no contamination remains in the compressed air. High-pressure air compressors are also used in an extensive range of other important industries, including but not limited to the aerospace, automotive, electronics, component testing, power generation and distribution, mining, metal and metallurgy, food and beverage, glass and ceramics, marine, oil and gas, and plastic sectors, as well as for chemical, pharmaceutical, packaging, petrochemical and underwater exploration and construction applications.
