Why Are Compressed Air Dryers Vital To Your Compressed Air Set-Up?

Compressed air dryers are a vital component of any air treatment or downstream system, as it is their job to eliminate moisture from your compressed air. When it comes to powering pneumatic tools and other production lines or industrial process equipment, moisture is the enemy! This is because it can lead to accelerated equipment degradation, bacteria growth, frozen airlines and substandard products or complete product spoilage due to moisture-filled air. This can have cost and time implications, impacting the overall productivity and efficiency of your operations due to unexpected downtime. Removing moisture from your system is therefore essential to maximise your air quality and purity and, in turn, your efficiency!

Refrigerant Dryers:

Refrigerant dryers are the most commonly used dryers for compressed air. They use heat exchange technology to cool the air, which in turn condenses the bulk of the water vapour in the air. Once this is condensed, the water is drained out at about +3 degrees, the air is then reheated to room temperature to ensure no water collects in the pipework.

Desiccant Dryers:

Desiccant dryers utilize the principle of moisture migrating towards the dryest medium to attract moisture out of the air. Compressed air is passed over an absorbent desiccant medium which draws moisture out of the air through adsorption.

Membrane Dryers:

Membrane dryers work by utilizing a special type of semi-permeable membrane to separate water vapor from the air. When the ‘wet’ compressed air enters the dryer, the membrane allows water vapor to collect between the fibres, separating it from the air and purging it. The ‘dry’ air then flows out to go onto whichever application it is being used for.

Applications and Advantages

► Refrigerant Dryers

  • Low pressure loss
  • Energy saving modes available
  • Low operating costs
