Working Safely With Compressed Air
Compressed air is a safe and reliable form of power, widely used in industry and business.
Both employers and employees have a responsibility for safety in the workplace. Compressed air users must know how to work safely and understand the risks involved if good practice is not followed.
Undertaking this course will help fulfill employers’ health and safety obligations and provide evidence by the online assessment that the individual has understood safe working practices and their responsibilities.
This BCAS course takes an hour to complete, with a 20-minute final quiz and covers the following subject areas:
- Hazards of compressed air as an energy source
- Hazards arising from various air tools, including noise, vibration, fumes, hoses and connectors etc
- The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Employer and employee responsibilities with respect to Health and Safety when using compressed air
- Specific hazards and risks associated with blow gun use
- A list of safe working practices to be followed
A downloadable safety card is also provided with this course.
Certificate in Compressed Air Systems Technology
The Certificate in Compressed Air System Technology (CAST) provides a comprehensive introduction to the main principles of compressed air systems. It is a unique qualification to meet the needs of employers for compressed air training, with no previous knowledge of the subject required.
The course has been written by experts in the industry and is accredited by BCAS, it is a unique qualification to meet the needs of employers for compressed air training.
This course is highly relevant to anyone needing to know more about compressed air production and use, relevant health and safety issues, legislation and energy efficiency. It is of relevance to manufacturers, distributors, installers and for any business using compressed air equipment and systems.
The course will equip employees with a greater understanding of compressed air principles and represents a significant business advantage in terms of employee development and customer service.
Certificate in Compressed Air Treatment Technology (CATT)
The course provides a tutorial to help you understand where contaminants come from, how they can affect compressed air systems and how they are best removed.
Compressed air is a safe and reliable form of power, widely used in industry and business. Compressed air: however, is not clean it contains many hazards in the form of contamination. In a typical compressed air system, there are ten main contaminants that require treatment if the system is to operate safely, efficiently and cost effectively.
Enrolling on this course will help you understand the necessity of compressed air treatment, how it is achieved, the many different types of equipment available and how they are selected to achieve the best results.
This BCAS course takes an hour to complete and covers the following subject areas:
- Identify the different types of compressed air contamination
- Identify the sources of compressed air contamination
- Understand the different types of compressed air filtration technologies available and the contaminants they treat
- Understand the different technologies available to dry compressed air
- A downloadable safety card is also provided with this course.
A downloadable Guide is also provided with this course
Understanding Breathing Air (BS EN 12021)
The course will guide you through the breathing air regulations and the provision of breathable air to be used by a person in the execution of a work-related task. A full understanding of standards BS EN 12021 and the legal requirements are vital.
This BCAS course takes an hour to complete and covers the following subject areas:
- Identify the different types of compressed contamination found in breathing air

Blended Learning Courses
Blended learning courses are CPD-approved and offer a combination of online self study and virtual classroom learning, with assessment by a BCA qualified tutor.
Understanding ISO 8573 – The Air Quality Standard
A full understanding of ISO 8573 is vital before any decisions on equipment selection and testing methods are undertaken. This course therefore explains the importance of considering all parts of a compressed air system, whether you are a supplier, consultant, service provider, or user of compressed air.
This blended learning workshop will guide you through each part of ISO 8573, the air quality standard. Learners complete a self-study e-learning module followed by a virtual class room with our expert to help cement learning, dispel myths and understand the most frequently asked questions. The course is completed with an online examination.
This course is devised of 3 hours of online learning, 3 hours of virtual classroom and a 1 hour final online test.
Understanding Pressure Systems Safety Regulations
( PSSR 2000 S.I.128 )
This blended learning workshop covers the written scheme of examination in relation to compressed air systems.
It provides knowledge of the Pressure Systems’ Safety Regulations (S.I 2000 No 128), related standards and codes of practice.
Its purpose is to provide the knowledge and understanding required as a user, manager, or provider of written schemes of examination.
Learners complete a self study e-learning module followed by a virtual class room session with our PSSR expert to cement learning, dispel myths and understand the most frequently asked questions. The course is completed with an online examination.
